The Sonya Rapoport papers document the life and work of this American conceptual/ digital artist. Included in the collection are artworks, research for artworks, exhibition announcements, correspondence and other materials documenting Rapoport’s work over the course of five decades.
Biographical Note
Sonya Rapoport was an American conceptual/ digital artist. Rapoport was born in Boston, Massachusetts on October 6, 1923. She studied at Massachusetts College of Art, Boston University and New York University, where she earned a B.A. in Labor Economics in 1946. She and her husband Henry Rapoport moved to Berkeley, California in 1947. She then continued her education, earning a masters in art practice in 1949 from the University of California. In the 1970s Rapoport turned her artistic focus to electronic media, a medium in which she worked until her death in 2014.
Scope and Content
The Sonya Rapoport papers document the life and work of this American conceptual/ digital artist. Included in the collection are artworks, research for artworks, exhibition announcements, correspondence and other materials documenting Rapoport’s work over the course of five decades.
The papers were organized by Rapoport and an assistant prior to their being donated to the Bancroft Library. The series structure and organization imposed by Rapoport and her assistant have been retained.
